Very beautiful Renaissance prose. Before I started reading cover to cover I selected individual stories from the synopsis in the front of the book. Readers in the UK may find some of its Americanisms off-putting.

Get it......you won't be sorry. It's no surprise to say there is sexual content in the Decameron, but to say it is explicit overlooks the wonderfully clever circumlocutions relating to such subjects.

Some of the phrases included have obviously not been checked for correct context - 'my first kids' instead of 'my youth' for example - and many words don't even exist in English 'beseemeth' and 'certes'.

It appears someone took the Decameron in Italian and ran it through a bad translator program. Funny, thought provoking, rude and utterly humane. The notes are helpful. This is a truly terrible translation into English, seemingly done by computer with little or no human intervention, and almost unreadable. The book is structured as a frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of seven young women and three young men sheltering in a secluded villa just outside Florence to escape the Black Death, which was afflicting the city.
